If you're looking for a devoted, enthusiastic companion on your daily routine and big adventures, look no further than Ellie here, who's currently entertaining all her friends at Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe. A recent arrival, she's 5 years old, the perfect size at 47 pounds, and ready to share the joy of life with all she meets, whether this involves chasing a ball, going for a ride in the car, or just hanging out. She's spayed and microchipped; her leash manners are great, ditto her house training. She's just waiting for her own person to appreciate her and soak up the love. Scooby Doo - Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe
Looking for a big dog? One who's up for whatever adventures you have in mind that day? Especially if they involve water? Meet Scooby Doo, an energetic, athletic young fellow currently residing at Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe, where his caretakers report that yes, he does love the lake. At 83 pounds, Scooby is 3 years old and pretty much enthusiastic about everything—which occasionally gets the better of him, so it's good for his human to remind him about things like structure from time to time. He's smart and eager to please his person, so there's a great relationship and lifetime of companionship in store for someone who'll take the time for him and find fun things to do. more »

Looking for some youthful energy in your life? Here's Cha Cha, who's 5 months old and looking for her own family. She landed at Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe with her sister, who's been adopted, so it's time for her to start her own adventure. Cha Cha's a cute Chi mix who's still got a bit of growing to do, but at a current 8.2 pounds, she's going to be a little dog—on the outside, anyway. Check her out here—she's spayed, microchipped, and current on all her vaccinations, so she's ready to go home with you! more »

Lake Tahoe is at its glorious best in summer, but you have to be a very early riser to get a parking spot at a dog-friendly beach on weekends. Our advice: Sleep in, then head for High Camp, the high-altitude recreation complex at Palisades Tahoe, where a pool, hot tub, roller rink, limitless hiking options and plenty of free parking await. There are two ways up: the dog-friendly Shirley Lake Trail or the iconic (and dog-friendly) aerial trammore »
As anyone coming up to Lake Tahoe from sea level knows, that first day of hiking above 6,500 feet is a pant-inducing endeavor. But did you know that you (and your dog) can “cheat?” more »
Mable the dog
Mable is still up for adoption
The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) has taken in three dogs rescued in Thailand. Soi Dog, a Thai rescue organization saved the animals from an illegal dog-meat trade then worked with HSTT to shelter the trio and find them homes. They arrived in Truckee January 18. This is the first time HSTT has taken in animals from an international shelter.

The Truckee shelter is only one of two in the U.S. Soi Dog has worked with. Soi Dog works with a handful of other countries to protect abused and neglected animals. According to Emily Watt, animal programs manager at HSTT, the illegal meat trade is a prominent issue in Thailand. Dogs are often lured away from homes to be captured and sold into the meat trade. more »

2013 was a banner year for our friends at the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe. In September, after years of hard work and fundraising, the city's cool new state-of-the-art animal shelter (a joint project of the HSTT and the Town of Truckee) opened its doors. Dogs and cats who'd been living in cramped kennels are now enjoying spacious quarters and fun play areas while they wait for their new families. more »
Meet Pumpkin, a 5-year-old Australian kelpie mix whose career as a ranch dog apparently came to an end when she was kicked by a cow and severely injured. Instead of taking her to a vet, her previous owners chained her outside, where she was rescued by some volunteers from the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe.

Ronnie, dog at Humane Society of Truckee-TahoeMeet Ronnie, who's about 8 months old and discovering training for the first time at the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe. Luckily, this bouncy boy is bright, anxious to please, and learning fast, and he's hoping to find a person who'll enjoy working with him and teaching him new things. Providing a safety net for Ronnie and all the pets of the Truckee-Tahoe area has been the mission of the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe for some time now, and thanks to enthusiastic community support, which ranges from hundreds of hands-on volunteers to funding from the Town of Truckee, it's been remarkably successful.
