Dogs like Nike have a safe place to land when their owners can't keep them.

SPCA for Monterey County 2012

NikeCheck out handsome Nike, a recent arrival at the SPCA for Monterey County. This bright young fellow is an Australian shepherd mix and a good boy, who's beginning his training in the shelter but will certainly benefit from further development of his mighty brain in his new home, as well as plenty of activity to keep him busy. He's a bit much for small kids, but will do well with adults and older kids.

If you're in the Central Coast area this weekend, you have a couple of opportunities to have some doggy fun and help the SPCA help dogs like Nike. On Saturday, the King City Veterinary Hospital hosts its annual 5K Walk and Run benefiting the SPCA's spay-neuter program. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., and there are games and contests after the run. On Sunday, Congregation Beth Israel in Carmel presents the Furry Friends Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., where you can have your dog blessed in addition to consulting a behaviorist, visiting a photographer, and taking part in cool contests. The SPCA will be on hand with adoptable dogs at the event as well. Get the details on both events here.
