The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) for Monterey County is a nonprofit, independent, donor-supported humane society that has been serving the animals and people of Monterey County since 1905.

SPCA for Monterey County is the only open-admission shelter in Monterey County, taking in all the area's unwanted pets and all stray pets from areas not covered by the two local tax-funded shelters. They help cats and dogs as well as horses, barn animals, small pets, exotics, and wildlife.

The shelter also places thousands of cats, dogs, horses, barn pets, exotic pets, and more into new homes every single year. Their shelter is a comfortable, happy, loving place for both animals and adopters.

Since we last checked in with the good folks at SPCA for Monterey County, they've come to the rescue of a remarkable range of animals—you'd expect dogs and cats, but here you can also adopt Buddy, a very handsome rooster. Or Abel the horse, who came to the SPCA in bad shape as part of a cruelty investigation, but is now in much better health and spirits. more »
NikeCheck out handsome Nike, a recent arrival at the SPCA for Monterey County. This bright young fellow is an Australian shepherd mix and a good boy, who's beginning his training in the shelter but will certainly benefit from further development of his mighty brain in his new home, as well as plenty of activity to keep him busy. He's a bit much for small kids, but will do well with adults and older kids. more »
Coming up this Saturday, May 5, 2012, in Monterey: the 17th Annual Wag 'n' Walk, a day of fun for people (and dogs, if they're so inclined), to raise funds for the SPCA for Monterey County, which has been helping the county's critters since 1905. Enjoy food, fun activities, and a healthy 2- or 4-mile walk, to help the SPCA's ongoing work, which benefits not only dogs and cats, but farm animals and wildlife, and includes programs from Meals on Wheels to disaster relief as the need arises.   Eve, an adoptable puppyAmong the cuties currently residing at the SPCA while waiting for a new home is little Eve, who turned up wandering the streets of Seaside and is very happy to be in a safer place. This affectionate 5-month-old border terrier mix girl has lots of personality; being a smart puppy, she's going to need some training so she grows up to be a great companion and family member. Find out more about her here.

Dog lying down on command from trainerDo you tell your dog to “come,” or do you use the command “here?” Does Rowdy understand the difference between “down” and “off?” What’s your opinion on pinch collars? more »

Since 1905, the SPCA for Monterey County, an independent, donor-supported non-profit organization, has been coming to the aid of animals in need--not just dogs and cats, but horses, wildlife, exotics, and whatever living creatures find themselves requiring assistance. In addition to offering shelter and veterinary services, the SPCA has developed some innovative programs and partnerships, for example, PetMeals, a collaboration with Meals on Wheels, and a Pet Food Bank, a safety net for people having trouble feeding their pets in hard times. In addition, they were the first animal welfare agency to partner with the American Red Cross to shelter pets adjacent to human evacuation shelters during a disaster. Coming up May 7 is Wag 'n' Walk, SPCA for Monterey County's annual fundraising day of fun.

Currently adoptable is 2-year-old Bella, a tiny Chihuahua mix, just under six pounds. Her previous owners moved on, so she's looking for new snuggling opportunities, further adventures, and a lifetime of affection.
