The Point Cabrillo Preserve, a California State Historic Park, includes the picturesque lighthouse built in 1909 on a spectacular headland jutting into the Pacific.

Leashed dogs are welcome on preserve trails and in the lighthouse, which is a half-mile walk from the parking lot and visitors center. This is a great location for winter whale spotting.

Dogs (or adventure cats!) are also welcome inside museums and gift shops, as long as they are well-behaved and kept on short leashes.

For visitors up for an overnight adventure, the head light-keeper's house and surrounding cottages are available as vacation rentals, although just one unit, the West Cottage, is dog-friendly. It can be booked through Mendocino Coast Reservations, VRBO and other agencies.

A mere five minutes from Little River, much-photographed Mendocino Village, with its wealth of lacy Victorians and colorful saltbox cottages, is loaded with places to enjoy with your four-legged friend. Our top pick is Stanford Inn by the Sea, just south of the village across Big River. Once you’ve explored the compact downtown, get your tails over to Mendocino Headlands State Park, which surrounds the town on three sides. more »

The California coast is nothing if not moody in late fall and early winter. Calm, crystal-clear days are interspersed with blustery gray ones, so it’s best to prepare for all possibilities. DogTrekkers who prefer cabin or cottage accommodations to standard hotels and motels will find a staggering selection of dog-friendly options along the coast. more »

It’s just 17 miles along scenic Highway 1 from the coastal village of Albion to the more muscular city of Fort Bragg, but considering how much lies in between, you could take an entire, leisurely week to go the distance. more »
While Carmel has the well-earned reputation as the dog-friendly capital of the world, Mendocino is certainly nipping at her heels. In Dog Fancy Magazine’s 2010 Top-40 dog-friendly towns in the country, Mendocino Coast’s Fort Bragg came in at number 5. Kayla has always found Mendocino to be welcoming towards 4-legged critters.  more »
