The Point Cabrillo Preserve, a California State Historic Park, includes the picturesque lighthouse built in 1909 on a spectacular headland jutting into the Pacific.
Leashed dogs are welcome on preserve trails and in the lighthouse, which is a half-mile walk from the parking lot and visitors center. This is a great location for winter whale spotting.
Dogs (or adventure cats!) are also welcome inside museums and gift shops, as long as they are well-behaved and kept on short leashes.
For visitors up for an overnight adventure, the head light-keeper's house and surrounding cottages are available as vacation rentals, although just one unit, the West Cottage, is dog-friendly. It can be booked through Mendocino Coast Reservations, VRBO and other agencies.
