Piper's still practically a puppy at 9 months old, and now that she's safe and sound in a foster home with the good folks at Contra Costa Humane Society, she's feeling a good deal more secure about things and seeks a home of her own where she can really settle in. more »

Best in Show
Here's a fun evening out for you and your canine pal: "Best in Show," a benefit bash for the Contra Costa Humane Society. It's an event like no other, where you and Bosco can dress to the nines and enjoy meeting and greeting your fellow guests — all while watching a live broadcast of the 139th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on the big screen. There will be hors d'oeuvres and desserts, as well as fine wine and Champagne from some of the best local purveyors. Door prizes and other surprises add to the fun. more »

Since moving into its new combined office/shelter space in Pleasant Hill earlier this year, Contra Costa Humane Society has been even busier, not only at providing safe havens for many of the dogs and cats who wind up in overcrowded county shelters, but in proactive efforts designed to keep pets and their people happy and safe together. These range from SNAP, the spay/neuter assistance program, to AniMeals, a local partnership that gets quality food and supplies to the animal companions of those in need so hard times don't have to break up the family. more »
Contra Costa Humane Society, a no-kill shelter for dogs and cats, has relocated to an all-in-one facility in Pleasant Hill. CCHS is still looking for a permanent place to own, but for now this location will mean more animals find their forever homes. more »
egghunt art Founded in 1991, Contra Costa Humane Society (CCHS) works to improve and save the lives of animals in the county through a variety of successful programs, from low-cost spay-neuter assistance (SNAP) to the AniMeals program (a partnership with local food banks and Pet Food Express) to help people having hard times keep their pets, instead of having to give them up, by providing pet food to 450 needy families. CCHS also strives to educate people to foster compassion, responsibility and respect toward animals, with the goal of improving animals' quality of life and reducing euthanasia rates.

Thanks to a grant from Maddie's Fund, CCHS, which doesn't operate a dog shelter (though it does operate the Kitty Corner adoption center in collaboration with Contra Costa Animal Services), has been able to launch a number of successful adoption initiatives, from its foster program, which pulls dogs from local shelters and gives them a safe haven till their adopters come along, to a re-homing service through which the humane society acts as a matchmaker between people who must give up their dog, and prospective adopters. more »
