Since moving into its new combined office/shelter space in Pleasant Hill earlier this year, Contra Costa Humane Society has been even busier, not only at providing safe havens for many of the dogs and cats who wind up in overcrowded county shelters, but in proactive efforts designed to keep pets and their people happy and safe together. These range from SNAP, the spay/neuter assistance program, to AniMeals, a local partnership that gets quality food and supplies to the animal companions of those in need so hard times don't have to break up the family.

Thanks to a growing network of supporters and fosters, CCHS has been able to take in more dogs in recent years, providing them with training and TLC in home settings until their forever family finds them. One of them who's currently waiting is young Phinny, who narrowly escaped a premature death when CCHS rescued him from a public shelter where he was about to be euthanized—because he couldn't open his mouth and was starving. Apparently earlier in this young boxer/pit mix's life, someone or something hit him in the face, smashing many bones, some of which fused his jaw shut when they healed without treatment. After much nutrition and medical attention, Phinny is doing just fine and enjoys his meals and chew toys—almost as much as he loves giving kisses. He's now looking for his forever home, ideally with someone familiar with the bully breeds so Phinny gets the understanding and the structure he needs for a great life.

Meet the incredible folks from CCHS and their furry guests at these upcoming events. On Sunday, May 18, they'll be taking part in ARF's Animals on Broadway festival at Heather Farms Park in Walnut Creek; then, on May 31-June 1, they'll be participating in Maddie's Pet Adoption Days at multiple locations, including the Furry Pet Faire in John Baldwin Park, Concord on May 31. Mark your calendars now!
