If you seek a companion for your High Sierra adventures, look no further than Jack, seen here enjoying an outing to the Feather River with his friends at High Sierra Animal Rescue. This guy, believed to be a Lab/pug mix, may be small, but he's got a bigger dog's adventurous spirit. At 6, he's ready to join you on the trail, at the shore, and also in some cozy relaxing when day is done.
"Jack is mellow, sweet, and ready for anything," reports HSAR executive director Heidi Rose. "He can be a cuddly lap dog or he can get up and go and do anything a big dog can. He likes to swim, He is very good in the car and loves to go places!"
HSAR, a no-kill shelter founded in 1999, has saved over 4,000 dogs and found them loving homes, growing in the process to a great community resource with spay/neuter services, humane education, and a safe place to land for the region's dogs in a bind.
Rose explains that most of the dogs who arrive at HSAR's rescue facility from area shelters need a bit of extra attention —sometimes more than a bit, as in the case of a group of under-socialized Chihuahuas, recent arrivals now learning that humans can be pretty great, thanks to a lot of dedicated volunteers. For other dogs, it's a medical problem, like needing treatment or a quiet place to convalesce. Whatever the issue, HSAR teams with vets, behaviorists, and a lot of kind folks to ensure each dog's happy future.
Making all this possible are a lot of kind supporters and friends, especially those who've joined the ranks of Guardians, making monthly contributions to sustain HSAR's work. Coming up on September 17 is the fun side of fundraising, as HSAR fans take to the golf links to take part in Duffers for Dogs.
