The good folks at Helen Woodward Animal Center have seen quite a few surprising things in their decades of providing resources and support to the San Diego area's animals and their people. But even they weren't prepared for the amazing arrival of the tiny puppy now known as Piccolo, who, in early January, suddenly materialized in the crate of an older dog who was temporarily elsewhere.

Video shows a woman entering the building carrying the puppy, who was much too young to leave her mom; fortunately, Animal Center staff got little Piccolo to the vet and into foster care.

If you're in the San Diego area, the Animal Center has a couple of upcoming opportunities for fun with your pooch to help dogs like Piccolo, just one of thousands of pets the Animal Center saves and places in loving homes each year. This weekend, on February 7, you and Phydeaux can share the bon temps at the Animal Center's awesome Doggie-Gras celebration, with parade, costume contest, and other fun activity at the Rancho Santa Fe Farmers' Market.

Looking for something a bit more vigorous? Bring the whole family to Lake Poway for the Puppy Love 5K, featuring three miles of ups, downs, and ever-changing vistas. There's plenty of fun for adults, kids, and dogs, whether you go for competitive running or leisurely strolls. Whether you're a local or just visiting the area, the race, now in its 8th year, offers a great opportunity to enjoy the wide open spaces in good company, and also help the thousands of homeless critters who land on the Animal Center's doorstep.
