This historic logging railroad is irresistible not just to rail buffs, but to families who want to give their kids something to remember. A variety of rides are offered, with dogs welcome on daytime but not dinner or moonlight excursions.

Choose a train pulled by a Shay locomotive built in in 1913 or 1928 for lumber operations in Tuolumne County, or opt for a "Model A"-powered ride behind a Jenny railcar. Either way, you can enjoy exhibits, picnic grounds and hiking in the area.

• Leashed dogs not shy of loud noise are welcome to sit on your lap or by your side.

Tuolumne County is the heart of California Gold Country, and to get a feel for it, you and your family will want to visit both Columbia State Historic Park, with its living history attractions, and just six miles away, the Railtown 1897 State Historic Park. The steam train and water tower, featured many Hollywood movies and TV shows, is a centerpiece in what is known as the Movie Railroad.

If you’re coming from Southern California, the Highway 41 corridor from Fresno up to Yosemite’s (South) Entrance, past Fish Camp, is probably the way you’ll go. The road begins its serious climb in Oakhurst, where Queen’s Inn by the River boasts an adjacent winery and  beer garden serving up almost 100 wines and craft beers on Wednesday through Sunday afternoons. Also in Oakhurst are Vulture’s View Inn, a B&B popular with DogTrekkers, and the dreamy (and dog-friendly) Chateau Du Sureau, a five-star, castle-like estate hotel. more »

The town Oakhurst in Madera County is the main gateway to Yosemite’s south (Wawona) entrance on the Highway 41 corridor winding through the Sierra Nevada foothills from Fresno. A great stop in Oakhurst is Queen’s Inn by the River, a dog-friendly establishment boasting an adjacent winery, the Idle Hour, and a beer garden where, Wednesdays through Sundays, almost 100 wines and craft beers are available for tasting.
