Access the Suisun Hill Trail through the gate across from the Rush Ranch entrance on Grizzly Island Road. Head toward the hills and at the first fork turn left for a 500-foot climb to an overlook with expansive views of Mount Diablo, Suisun Marsh, and the western hills of Solano County. Continue down the other side of the hill for a two-mile loop. This is an excellent trail to see soaring raptors, especially in winter.

There's no shade, so winter and spring are the best times for a hike. Afterward, visit the complex of historic ranch buildings at the center of Rush Ranch Open Space. Dogs must be leashed to protect wildlife and cattle.

Getting there:

From Sacramento, take Interstate 80 west to Fairfield and exit at Abernathy Road, turning left toward Highway 12. Turn left onto 12 and proceed approximately three miles to Grizzly Island Road. Turn right and proceed approximately two miles to ranch entrance on right. Look for trailhead on the left.

From San Francisco, take Interstate 80 east to Fairfield and exit at Highway 12 toward Rio Vista. Follow directions above.

Blasting down Interstate 80 through Fairfield, it’s hard to believe that just a few miles off the highway lies a 2,070-acre swath of landscape little changed since before suburban sprawl began claiming the surrounding hills.  more »
