This popular hike in the Los Padres National Forest is best just after a rain, when the waterfalls are flowing and swimming holes are full. It's pretty at any time of year, however, and on clear days, the views go on forever. Allow about two hours for the 3- to 4-mile hike. Elevation gain is 800 feet. Wear sturdy shoes, as a lot of rock-hopping is involved.

Directions:
From the Santa Barbara Mission, drive to Foothill Road and turn right. Continue to the fire station, turn left and follow Mission Canyon Road. Bearing left, follow Tunnel Road to its end. Park on the right and make sure you stay within the white line; cars parked illegally are frequently ticketed. Hike down the road to the metal gate and the trailhead.

Help keep this trail beautiful and dog-friendly:
• Always follow the posted rules as they may have changed
• If in off-leash area, keep your dog under voice command
• Respect and protect wildlife and habitats
• Pack in and pack out, leaving only paw prints

How good are you and your dog at rock-hopping and scrambling? You’ll need to put those skills to work on the popular 7 Falls Trail in the Los Padres National Forest outside Santa Barbara. It’s best just after a rain, when the falls are gushing. The 3.2-mile out-and-back is accessible and dog-friendly year-round. Parking at the trailhead is limited and strict, so stay behind the white line and don’t try to fudge. more »

Almost everything in Santa Barbara, from the beautiful buildings to the beautiful people, the beautiful seashore and the beautiful dogs, qualifies as eye candy. The “American Riviera” is the kind of place where you can ditch your car, leash up your dog and wander, perhaps finding yourself admiring Spanish colonial architecture on the podcast-guided Red Tile Walking Tour, or enjoying the plantings at the dog-friendly Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. The Santa Barbara pier and the multi-use path paralleling the beach offer lively perspectives, and at Arroyo Burro Beach you can unclip and let Rover run free. more »
