This is a popular fishing lake with no swimming allowed. The water's so clear that at noon you can see to the bottom; it's like fishing in an aquarium. Upper Sardine Lake, a smaller lake in a glacial bowl, is a short walk up the hill. This area is popular for snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in winter.

The Sardine Lake campground, open late spring into mid-fall,  has 27 non-electric sites with picnic table and fire ring. Reservations are recommended in summer.

Dogs on leash are welcome; please pick up after them at all times.

Sardine Lakes are due north of Sierra City about 15 minutes via Gold Lakes Road.
