The Point Defiance Loop begins on the north side of the Bridgeport Covered Bridge and follows the river for a mile to Point Defiance, where it flows into Lake Englebright.

Many gravel bars along the way make good splash spots in summer. A boat-in (or hike-in) group campsite at the point, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, when unoccupied makes a good spot to picnic and let your dog go for a swim. From here the trail climbs a hill and winds through woodlands with lake views for another 1.8 miles before sloping back down to the bridge.

The Sierra foothills cover hundreds of square miles, so your best bet for a wildflower-and-waterfalls weekend is to narrow down an itinerary. Our suggestion: take Highway 20 east out of Marysville (Sutter County) and spend a day or a weekend exploring several sites between there and Grass Valley/Nevada City, a distance of about 40 miles. more »
