Napa Humane

The 11th annual Walk for Animals event benefiting Napa Valley's companion animals is not only the community's largest pet-friendly event, it's also Napa Humane's biggest annual fundraiser.

Registered walkers will receive a goodie bag, access to the silent auction held the day of Walk, events and more as we come together virtually to raise funds for Napa Humane – serving Napa Valley pets and their people.

Since we last checked in with Napa Humane, they've been working hard for the critters of Napa Valley. Besides working with local shelters and rescues to get dogs (and other species) into loving forever homes, Napa Humane offers community support resources to keep pets well and happy with the families they've already got—and prevent them from landing in the shelter system in the first place. more »

Pawsport Napa Valley, benefiting Napa Humane, will take place Thursday, May 12 through Sunday, May 15 at many of the Valley’s most prominent and most dog-friendly wineries. more »

Thanks to innovative thinking, creative collaborations and a whole lot of community support, Napa Humane is able to provide a wide range of services to the county's critters and their human families. Partnering with the Napa County Animal Shelter, these good folks bring dogs (as well as kitties and rabbits) from the shelter to the Napa Farmers Market to meet and greet prospective new families. But keeping pets in the loving homes they've already got is usually a better solution for all involved, and that's where a big part of Napa Humane's work is directed, from spay/neuter/microchip/ vaccination clinics and licensing to behavior training and health tips. more »

Napa Humane has announced that their inaugural “Pawsport Napa Valley” will be held March 23 – 26, 2012. This four-day event will provide animal lovers with a wide variety of exclusive tastings, events, and specials offerings at 18 wineries in the Napa Valley.

Proceeds from “Pawsport Napa Valley” will support Napa Humane and its programs and services to fulfill their ongoing mission to promote the welfare of companion animals through protection, advocacy, education and by example. Most of the wineries are dog-friendly! more »

For many humane societies, losing their animal shelter, as Napa Humane did in 2002 to a flood control project, would be a fatal blow. For Napa Humane, it was an opportunity to consider the real needs of the Valley's animals and how best to address those needs — which were more about keeping animals from entering the animal shelter in the first place than who was running the shelter. This transition involved a good deal of self-reinvention and working synergistically with the community. Napa Humane has been thinking creatively ever since — whether it's been partnering with local wineries and other businesses to raise funds or collaborating with the Napa County Animal Shelter and local animal welfare groups to facilitate quick adoptions by making the dogs, cats and rabbits in their care more visible.

The results of all these collaborative efforts are impressive — in contrast to many rural animal shelters, the Napa County Animal Shelter is not overwhelmed with unwanted pets, staff can focus on their cases that need special TLC, and Napa Humane is able to provide support and resources to assist them. It's a great example of community members pitching in with their own particular strengths, and the animals winning big.
