Muttville’s mission is to change the way the world thinks about and treats older dogs and to create better lives for them through rescue, foster, adoption and hospice.

They reach out to senior and special needs rescue dogs; find suitable homes for those dogs that are adoptable; and offer end of life care for those that are not.

Muttville’s cage-free facility, foster program, on-site veterinary suite, and hospice program are innovations that have been lauded and emulated around the country. Muttville has received the highest ratings from both Guidestar and Charity Navigator, the leading nonprofit watchdog organizations.

“I had no idea how we were going to do this,” says Sherri Franklin, founder and CEO of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue. “I just knew that we had to.”
 
Muttville finds homes for over 1,000 senior dogs a year, many in shelters across California slated for euthanasia. They have over 80 seniors available for adoption at any one time, many in foster homes. But there are always at least 30 dogs at HQ awaiting medical exams or recuperating after the traumatic changes in their lives. more »

February is Eli’s Month of Love at Muttville Senior Dog Rescue! Thanks to the O'Donnell family, all senior dog adoptions are free to qualified adopters in memory of their sweet and cherished Yorkie mix, Eli. Eight years ago, the family adopted Eli from a New York shelter and named him after the Giants football star Eli Manning. more »

At Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, they sometimes take in elderly pooches who, for one reason or another, have a short life expectancy. Maybe an ultimately terminal medical condition, or maybe just reaching the twilight stage after many years. Often, though, these canine elders are having a perfectly fine time right now, and are looking for a bit more fun, adventure, and/or snuggles before they leave us. more »

Last year marked some milestones (like 912 senior dogs saved in 2016!) and accolades for Muttville, as founder Sherri Franklin was named a Top 10 CNN Hero in the CNN Heroes program. Since its founding, Muttville has drastically changed the way senior dogs are treated in the shelter system—once seen as "unadoptable," they're now valued, and the ripple effects extend out into the community. more »

It's been an eventful year so far for the good folks at Muttville Senior Dog Rescue. In July, Muttville founder and executive director Sherri Franklin was named a CNN Hero (one of 25) for her work as an example of "everyday people making a difference." In this case, to thousands of senior dogs who once faced a grim future, and to the people who've come to see them as the loving companions they are.

August was a record month for Muttville, with 97 senior dogs finding forever homes. And they just rescued senior dog #4,000. That would be Susie here, a 9-year-old Chihuahua mix whose outgoing personality and loving disposition win friends wherever she goes. more »

Muttville Senior Dog Rescue reached a milestone this week by rescuing its 2,000th senior dog. Varsha, a nine-year old cattle dog mix, was found wandering the streets of Oakland.  A good Samaritan coaxed her into a car and got her to Oakland Animal Services, where she was given shelter. Covered in scabs with a large portion of her hair missing -- and considered geriatric -- Varsha was not going to be an easy case, so three days later, OAS's rescue partner Martha Klein reached out to Muttville.  Varsha possessed the mild-mannered temperament required of Muttville dogs, and Muttville rescued her.    more »

Muttville Senior Dog Rescue 2012
Since we checked in with Muttville Senior Dog Rescue last year, they've been hard at work providing a safety net for elderly canines in the most dire circumstances. Like little Toby here, who somehow ended up in a shelter in Southern California after a lifetime with the same family. Over 1,250 senior dogs to date owe their lives to founder Sherri Franklin and Muttville—so it's no surprise Muttville just scored Best Rescue and Best Fundraising Event honors in Bay Woof's annual Beast of the Bay contest. One Of a Kind
SadieSadie is one of almost 1,200 senior dogs rescued by Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, but she’s also one of kind. She spent her first 10 years with a family, giving them all her love. But when the family moved, they took the furniture and locked the doors, leaving her behind. Sadie was all alone, heartsick and starving. When authorities finally came by, all that was in the house was Sadie and an empty box of oatmeal. It was clear she had been abandoned for weeks. She should have weighed 60 pounds, but had dropped to a skin-and-bones 28.   When Muttville Senior Dog Rescue heard about this sad girl and knew no one was coming back for her, they gladly took her in.  more »
