Murphys Vacation Rentals offers seven charming cottages (five of them dog-friendly) for visiting the Gold Country.

This charming town is a favorite because of the well-preserved Main Street with its historic buildings and more than a dozen wine-tasting rooms, most of them dog-friendly.

Besides tasting rooms, downtown is home to numerous restaurants ranging from casual to fine dining, plus art galleries and boutiques.

Many wineries with dog-friendly tasting rooms are situated within a few miles, while national forest lands beckon with endless hiking (and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter) opportunities.

Dog-friendly policies:

  • Size: All sizes
  • Breed restrictions: None
  • Maximum number allowed: 2
  • Cost per dog: $20 Per Night
  • Other comments: The Little Yellow, Parkside, Church Street and The Cabin properties are dog friendly. Parkside and Little Yellow have fenced policies.

Kennedy Meadows in Sonora. Rachael Moore (CC)
On Highway 49 you’ll find a string of Gold Rush-era towns delightfully uncrowded at this time of year. While Sutter Creek and Jackson are well known bed-and-breakfast havens, DogTrekkers in search of cottage accommodations will strike gold with private vacation rentals such as the family-friendly Sutter Creek Cottage, situated right on Sutter Creek and just two blocks from Main Street’s half-mile-long strip of antiques stores, boutiques, tasting rooms and restaurants, many of them dog friendly. more »

The history books don’t say much about the ruff 'n' ready canines who kept lonely miners company and guarded their claims back in the Gold Rush days. But it’s clear that dogs today are as welcome as the tourists who visit “them thar hills” in search of rest, relaxation and scenery.  more »
When it comes to history and charm overlaid with low-key sophistication, Murphys has everything going for it—except, alas, dog-friendly hotels. But no worries. more »
