There are three levels—lower, middle and upper—to McCloud Falls in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. At the Lower Falls, you'll find a picnic area and swimming hole. The hike to each of the falls is relatively easy, and the hike from the Middle to Upper Falls only takes about five minutes.

The hikes are very scenic and offer an opportunity to view various forms of vegetation and wildlife. Each of the falls is different from the other but they are all equally interesting. The trio of cascades can be seen on a 3.8-mile round-trip hike.

Directions:
• Take Interstate 5 to Highway 89 and the town of McCloud.
• Continue 5.5 miles east and watch for signs to Fowler’s Camp/McCloud Falls.
• Go right at .6 mile (a left here takes you to overlooks of Middle Falls and Upper Falls)
• Continue another .7 miles past the campground and park at the picnic area at the Lower Falls.
• Follow your ears toward Lower Falls and the beginning of the trail.

OK, COVID-19 cost us some waterfall viewing time during their March/April peak flows, but the many waterfalls within an easy drive of where you are staying in Redding are still flowing.

For a quick taste, visit Hedge Creek Falls in Dunsmuir. It’s right off Interstate 5 via a short path, has a generous parking lot, a viewing platform for photo opps and a cave beneath the falls for sensory thrills (your dog may or may not want to go there, so be alert!) more »

There are three pet-friendly campgrounds at MacKerricher State Park, just three miles from Fort Bragg in Mendocino County. The primo spot for dogtrekkers at Northern California’s favorite playground has to be Nevada Beach Campground, situated right on the lakeshore and home to the only sandy, off-leash stretch of beach at the lake. And the Eastern Sierra is packed with gorgeous scenery and more campgrounds than you can count. more »
Heading north from Redding, DogTrekkers will find an abundance of Fido-friendly hike, splash, play and stay choices—too many for just one trip. Mount Shasta City, nestled at the foot of the imposing, 14,162-foot volcanic peak of the same name, makes a great base for a getaway.  more »
