Our friends at the Marin Humane Society are working extra hard to find new homes for the dogs, cats, and other critters who come their way, and reunite lost ones with their families. The special effort comes because Marin Humane's the only Bay Area finalist in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge, and hoping to score some grant money by successfully placing lots of pets—at least 300 more than they did in the same time period last year. more »

From now to the end of October, our friends at the Marin Humane Society are working extra hard to find new homes for the dogs, cats, and other critters who come their way, and reunite lost ones with their families. BuckarooMarin Humane Society's animal welfare programs have been serving the county's critters and their people since 1907. For many animals in crisis, they make a truly life-saving difference by coming up with creative solutions— for example, the now-famous Pen Pals program that matches dogs in need of a bit of socialization with specially selected low-security inmates at San Quentin. Over the years, it's been a true win-win. more »
Boy and dog in Bon Tempe MeadowMore than 60,000 dogs live in Marin, according to estimates from the Marin Humane Society. Open space is the draw for residents and visitors alike, with tens of thousands of acres available for on- and off-leash activities. The Marin County Open Space District alone manages 34 preserves totaling 15,000 acres open to public recreation. At all but 10, well-behaved dogs under voice control can accompany you unleashed on fire prevention roads. more »
SportFound injured near a Novato gas station after being hit by a car, terrified little Sport was brought to the Marin Humane Society, where the veterinary staff treated him for multiple pelvic fractures and a fractured tooth. This plucky young Corgi mix quickly became a favorite of staff and volunteers. Since nobody came to claim him, Sport was sent to foster care at San Quentin State Prison as part of our Pen Pals program, which pairs animals who need time to rehabilitate with specially selected low-security inmates.  more »
Dog lying down on command from trainerDo you tell your dog to “come,” or do you use the command “here?” Does Rowdy understand the difference between “down” and “off?” What’s your opinion on pinch collars? more »

Marin Humane SocietyFounded in 1907, the Marin Humane Society looks out for the animals of Marin County—wild and domestic—with dozens of innovative, nationally known programs. The organization also is charged with enforcing local and county animal ordinances. Along the way, they provide a wealth of enrichment and services to community members of many species.

Dogs in Marin Humane's adoption center benefit from the extra time and TLC they need to make them ready to become perfect family members. Take the formerly obese Sweet Pea, found wandering the streets and brought to the shelter by a good Samaritan. Off to the Big House she went for some spa treatment and training as part of the Pen Pals program. In search of an easygoing lifestyle, this mellow girl will be happy with leisurely walks and snuggles on the couch.
