Mammoth Lakes is a resort area centered around the Mammoth Mountain ski area. This scenic area is a summer paradise for hiking, fishing, boating, golf and other recreational pursuits.

In summer, hikers with dogs can ride the Panorama Gondola to the top of the ski mountain and hike down the backside alongside a chain of lakes and streams.

Dogs are allowed on trails at Devil's Postpile National Monument and on the free shuttle buses in town and the national park shuttle to Red's Meadow and Devil's Postpile.

Muzzles are required on buses but not on the gondola.

Looking for a road trip that will have your dog wagging her tail the whole way? Free up four or more days for a leisurely junket on the federally designated Eastern Sierra Scenic Byway (Highway 395). It runs 150 miles between Topaz, just over the state line in Nevada, and Bishop in Southern California, skirting the Eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada, including our friends at Mammoth Lakes. The views are stunning, traffic is (usually) light and there’s much to explore along the way.

By now you will have, in an indirect way, circled the lake. Follow 50 up and over the mountains to Carson City and head south on Highway 395, a designated national scenic byway skirting the snow-capped Eastern Sierra. more »
