Lake Oroville, California's second largest reservoir, is full of surprises, as well as being a peaceful haven to relax and watch the sunset.

The Lake Oroville Complex is home to a wide variety of fish, and the lake is regularly stocked by the California Department of Fish and Game with coho salmon from the nearby Feather River Fish Hatchery.

The Hatchery, when in season, offers a close-up view of salmon, and signs provide self-guided tours for visitors. The lake's record-setting two-story fishery provides anglers with a variety of catches such as crappie, catfish, rainbow and German brown trout, bluegill, and green sunfish. Noted for its bass (spotted, large- and small-mouth, etc.) fishing, Lake Oroville is a popular spot for bass tournaments.

Dog-friendly houseboat rentals are available out of Lake Oroville Marina through Forever Resorts.

Dog-friendly policies:

  • Cost per dog: $100 non-refundable houseboat fee, per dog

Redding isn’t just California’s Trail Capital; nearby Shasta Lake is the state’s Houseboating Capital, as well. In the wake of a wet winter, Shasta will be filled to capacity this summer and houseboating business will be brisk, so if you’ve ever considered a houseboat vacation that includes your dog, now’s the time to make reservations. Several Shasta Lake marinas rent houseboats ranging in size and style from stripped-down models popular with fishermen to ginormous floating palaces like the 65-foot, triple-decker Titan, which features satellite-tracking TV, eight flat-screen monitors, a jetted tube slide and a hot tub big enough for a dozen (no one will tell if your dog hops in, too). Shasta’s 360 miles of jagged shoreline are indented with cover after cove where houseboaters can anchor out in solitude or bob in the company of others. more »

Get Your Butte in Gear
With more public lands than a DogTrekker could explore in a lifetime, Butte County is a great place for an outdoorsy getaway with your canine companion. The surprises start in the county seat of Chico, home to Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, a California State University campus and Bidwell Park, at 3,618 acres, one of the largest municipal parks in the country. While the developed Lower Park is home to playing fields, a nature center, a theater and other community facilities, the rougher, untamed Upper Park offers 70 miles of hiking trails and open areas where it's legal to let Fido romp off leash so long as he comes when you call. more »

The moon is bright, the water calm. An owl hoots, a fish flops. Fido perks his ears. No, you’re not camping: You’re floating through the weekend on a houseboat.

Whether you opt for a stripped-down model sleeping six or a floating palace that can handle a crowd, there’s nothing like a waterborne vacation to bring out your inner Huck Finn. more »

Houseboat rentals are available on many Northern California lakes and waterways, but—just as with hotels—not all rental companies welcome dogs, and some that do limit canines to just one or two of their oldest, least desirable boats. Before you get your heart set on that deluxe model with a rooftop hot tub, faux fireplace and big-screen TV, be sure to ask. In competitive markets such as Lake Shasta, you'll find lots of dog-friendly options. more »
