Early in 1982, Joullian Vineyards purchased 655 acres of hillside bench land at 1,400 feet in the heart of the remote Carmel Valley viticulture appellation. Following extensive contouring and terracing, 40 acres of densely spaced vines were planted.

The planting emphasized Bordeaux varieties and allocated two-thirds of the vineyard to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon...plus Carmel Valley’s first Zinfandel, which was personally planted by owner Dick Sias. The remaining acreage, originally planted to Chardonnay, was grafted to pre-Prohibition Zinfandel selections throughout the 1990’s.

The winery, completed in 1991, was designed to handle each vineyard block separately to ensure that the complex subtleties and nuances produced in the field could be transferred into the bottle.

Please check winery website for days and hours of operation.

Monterey wines rely on warm sun, cool fog and nurturing soils resulting in intense varietal flavor. Chardonnay, pinot blanc and riesling are notable varietals grown near the coast, while reds are more common in the warmer southern areas. You can sample them all while your dog waits patiently (we hope!) by your side at dozens of pet-friendly tasting rooms from Cannery Row to Carmel to the Santa Lucia Highlands. Best bet: Pick a region and check out our recommended itineraries. more »

They say that Monterey Wine Country is "where great taste begins." We know from experience that it's also a great place to experience dog-friendly hospitality along the River Road Wine Trail. Rolling hills misted with morning fog create memorable panoramas, while the climate is comfortable year-round. Pack a picnic, a camera and a leash and invite Fido to share in the memories. more »
