Many a family has spotted the fish pond and pulled over at this classic roadside resort to let their kids hook their first trout (for which parents pay by the inch). Herrington's, open May through October, also boasts a restaurant, bar and prime location along the Yuba River just outside Sierra City.

Accommodations at the resort range from motel-style rooms to units with full kitchens. Dog-friendly trails and picnic areas are available for guests' enjoyment. More than 20 lakes beckon outdoors enthusiasts within a nine-mile radius.

Sniffing Out Scenery In Sierra County

Even during the summer high season, Sierra County, home to fewer than 4,000 souls, is off the beaten track for most Northern California travelers. In fall, it can feel like your own private realm. Pack a suitcase, pop Max and Moxie into the car and embark on a 170-mile loop trip along the Yuba-Donner Scenic Byway to explore this rugged, less-visited part of Gold Country.

The first part of the route springs north from Interstate 80 to follow Highway 49 through Grass Valley and Nevada City.
