Gold Country Pet Resort & Training Center is owned and operated by Mike and Cherie Flores.

Cherie got involved training dogs back in 1989 after watching her own dog get hit by a car after failing to come when she called.

Cherie worked with hundreds of dogs in her tenure at a top Sacramento facility and in 1997 became involved in search and rescue training with German Shepherd dogs. She also competes in Schutzhund, a triathlon event for dogs.

Mike and Cherie often needed a kennel facility to leave a young dog in while they took the older dogs to a search. Unfortunately they couldn't find anything that met with their standards. Thus, they decided to open their own facility, designed to reduce the stress that both owners and dogs experience during their separation.

Mike and Cherie now live on a 57-acre property where canine guests have plenty of room to run.

Instead of traditional kennels, they offer "suites" with indoor-outdoor runs and fenced play yards where well socialized dogs can romp together. They can even arrange home pickup and drop-off for residents of Rancho Murrieta and Amador County.

Daycare is also available. Many day and overnight canine guests come to stay while their owners are attending events at nearby Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort.

In July 2014 they added a regulation size DockDogs diving pool and now offer lessons and aquatic competitions in addition to adding splash time to dog-boarding activities.

Amador County, best known for its robust zinfandels and barberas, celebrates big reds with its annual Barbera Festival, an outdoor sip-and-stroll event set this year for Sept. 16 at Terra d’Oro/Montevina Winery in the foothill town of Plymouth. More than 80 wineries from all over the state will be pouring, while top restaurants will offer samples of their fare. Artists, musicians and vendors will of course be on hand, too. If you can guarantee your dog will be a good dog in a crowded situation, bring her along (but be sure to keep her leashed, provide water and—you know the drill—pick up after her immediately should the need arise). more »
