Garrapata Beach, part of a state park of the same name, is a frequent subject for painters and photographers, who often can be spotted behind their easels and tripods as they capture the dramatic seascapes along two miles of beach front. Gray whales often pass close by during their January-March migration.

Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach at Gate 19 (south end of the park) and on trails leading to it. Dogs are not allowed in any other areas.

Directions:
Garrapata State Park is on Highway 1, 6.7 miles south of Rio Road in Carmel (18 miles north of Big Sur). Parking and trail access is via 19 numbered turnouts along Highway 1, all on the ocean side. Gates 18 and 19 are for beach access.

Help us keep this beach beautiful and dog-friendly:
• Always follow the posted rules
• Respect natural marine life and habitats
• Be aware of tides and currents
• Pack in and pack out, leaving only paw prints
