The forty-foot tall Eaton Canyon Falls fills the amphitheater at the top of Eaton Canyon Trail, tumbling into a wide pool that you can rest alongside or wade in. The waist-deep water is so refreshing, you are likely to see hikers in bathing suits on a warm day.

The trail to Eaton Canyon Falls can be summed up this way: 1.1 miles of wide flat dirt trail that can feel uneventful, followed by 0.65 miles of single track up a narrow canyon that is adventurous and fun (forming a 3.5 mile round trip hike with 375 feet of elevation gain).

If you can just get off of those L.A. freeways (and you can!) a great place to gulp some fresh air and take in some flowy eye candy is Eaton Canyon Falls just outside Pasadena, at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. Don’t expect a ton of solitude; the 184-acre preserve is a very popular place, and for good reason. In summer, you can splash in a waist-deep pool at the base of the 40-foot, single-drop cascade. more »

Los Angeles is lots more than jammed freeways, as anyone who’s taken time to explore its hilly terrain and beautiful beaches knows. Take in the vibrant urban scene on a paved trail one day, then head to the hills for a rural repast. The County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation maintains 177 parks, quite a few of which warmly welcome leashed canine visitors. And that’s not counting the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area or open space maintained under the stewardship of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancymore »
