Convict Lake, at 7,850 feet in the Eastern Sierra, is known for its fishing and the dramatic mountains that surround it. It was named after an incident on Sep. 23, 1871, when a group of convicts escaped from prison in Carson City, NV. A member of the posse that came after them was killed in the encounter.
A short walk from Convict Lake, the campground is located along Convict Creek. There are 85 campsites with bear lockers at each campsite. Many sites are flat and suitable for RVs however hookups are not available. Many are not shaded, so bring a pop-up if you have one.
The lake can be circumnavigated via a three-mile trail (leash for Fido required), and popular dog-friendly destinations such as Devil’s Postpile National Monument are just a short jaunt away. Hot showers and meals are available at the nearby Convict Lake Resort. Dump station is located along Convict Lake Road, 1/4 mile from campground.
Summer reservations can be hard to come by. Dogs must be leashed. This is an active bear area, and food lockers are provided.
