Coldstream Valley

Coldstream Valley

Truckee, California
Visit Website

This loop offers a mellow hike or ride offering views of the Sierra Crest, has nice flowers in the spring, and circumnavigates a series of ponds.

Proceed down Coldstream Road, which alternates pavement and dirt. After a short climb up the old terminal moraine of the glacier that once filled this valley, you will see the whole valley open up before you. Proceed on this road until you come to private property signs at the last pond. Turn left on the dirt road and return on the east side of the valley.

Directions:
• From downtown, head west on Donner Pass Road for about 2.5 miles. Here you will reach a single red flashing light. Turn left here. Park on the outside of the white gate.

• Distance: 6 miles round trip
• Please keep dogs on a leash at all time.
• Remember to bring water with you.

Help us keep this trail beautiful and dog-friendly:
• Always follow the posted rules as they may have changed
• If in off-leash area, keep your dog under voice command
• Respect and protect wildlife and habitats
• Pack in and pack out, leaving only paw prints

This in-between time of year, when snowfall in the mountains is still light or nonexistent, is a great time for one last hike in the high country with your four-legged friends. Check conditions before you go, come prepared for changing weather, wear waterproof boots, keep an eye to the sky, bring water for yourself and your dog, pack snowshoes just in case—and enjoy. Here are five favorite rambles not far off of Interstate 80. more »
If you're heading to or from Tahoe from Sacramento and the Bay Area on Highway 50, consider a half-day outing on Echo Lake, where you can rent a canoe, hike or take a boat taxi through snow-streaked scenery that will stick in your mind for weeks to come.
