Camp Nauvoo is a small (16 sites), family-owned campground near Placerville.

With dog-friendly tent sites strung out along a post-card-pretty Sierra stream, Camp Nauvoo has actually been around for awhile, having started as a Mormon girls camp in the 1960s and passed to the Boy Scouts for a few years before being taken over by local residents Greg and Laurie Rose.

Besides dog-friendly, pitch-your-own tent sites, the camp offers unfurnished platform tents, a pair of plains Indian-style teepees and two luxury, safari-style “glamping” tents for those in your party who are unaccompanied by canines.

The comfy lodge has a fireplace, restrooms, showers and barbecue area, while a big fire circle serves as an evening gathering place. There’s also a children’s playground, volleyball courts and more than two miles of hiking trails on the 86-acre property. All sites are walk-in, but carts are provided to help transport your gear. Please keep your dog on a leash.

It is recommend that you pre-treat your dog with flea and tick repellent 3 days prior to arrival.

Dog-friendly policies:

  • Size: All sizes
  • Breed restrictions: Friendly dogs are welcome at Camp Nauvoo

DogTrekkers in the know point their paws in fall toward the Apple Hill Growers region north of Highway 50 in El Dorado County near Placerville, where more than 50 member farms open their gates to the public for an applepalooza of festivities centered around the orb-shaped fruit. This year, there’s something new: the Apple Hill Hard Cider Trail, which makes its formal debut Sept. 15 with six producers showcasing their takes on the low-alcohol beverage that is taking America by storm. more »

Vintage travel-trailers, “glamping” tents and luxury yurts are part of an outdoorsy trend that is spreading all up and down California. For those who want to be close to nature but not have to wrestle with tent poles or bunk on the ground, it’s a concept that works. A top player is Auto Camp Airstream Parks, which operates three properties in downtown Santa Barbara; Guerneville in Sonoma County; and Midpines, not far from Yosemite National Park. more »
