This is one of the best dog-friendly beaches on the San Mateo coast. If the lot is full, there's also street parking and access north of the main lot, in a less crowded area.

The beach features fishing, picnicking, and beachcombing. Visitors can explore tide pools with anemones, crab, sea urchins and other marine inhabitants. The beach also has a self-guided nature trail.

Swimming is dangerous because of cold water, rip currents and heavy surf.

While you're near Pescadero, stop at Duarte's for some pie and soup!

DogTrekkers who live inland know they’re never far from Sweatshirt Land. So when the mercury climbs, those in the know leash up their pups and head for the coast, making base camp in unhurried towns like Benicia, Pacifica, Point Reyes Station (gateway to the national seashore) or Half Moon Bay, all of which are well appointed with hiking trails. Our most recent weekend away was to Half Moon Bay, where early-morning fog gave way to blue-sky days and the shooshing sea was a soothing backdrop for long walks along the gorgeous Coastside Trail. more »

Dog-friendly Half Moon Bay, at the heart of the region locals call “Coastside,” is part resort, part classic California surf town.

Beaches and bluffs are what it’s all about for visitors with dogs, and while off-leash opportunities are few, there are many ways to engage with the scenery.

Bean Hollow

This scenic slice of San Mateo coastline three miles south of Pescadero is composed of two accessible dents of waterfront — Bean Hollow and Pebble Beaches—connected by a mile-long nature trail along the coast. It's hard to know what to do first in Half Moon Bay: Explore miles and miles of pristine beaches, scarf up some seafood at a seaside café, ogle the surfers or window shop in the picturesque downtown district.

If your main goal is a sandy stroll, try chasing some waves with Rover at dog-friendly Montara or Bean Hollow state beaches, both within 20 minutes of town. more »
