Scenic 31-mile drive along a narrow, winding section of old Highway 1 between Phillipsville and Pepperwood passes through old-growth forests and an assortment of roadside attractions dating from the early days of California tourism and designed to show off the tallest trees on earth. Cabin-style motels predominate, several of them dog-friendly. Gift shops sell everything imaginable made of redwood. You can even drive your car through a tunnel bored through a tree in the 1930s.
