The Arcata Community Forest, just minutes from downtown, was established in 1955 to preserve the watershed from which the town drew its drinking water supply. The main area of second-growth redwoods covers about 800 acres and currently is used for education, recreation,  wildlife habitat and sustainable timber harvest. 

The forest forms the visual backdrop of the town is a recreational draw due to its extensive trail system.
