Coast Gallery Big Sur began as a small outlet for Big Sur artists and now features six galleries showcasing thousands of works from more than 250 American artists and artisans. Also on site is the Henry Miller Art Museum. Rustic gallery buildings crafted from recycled redwood water-storage tanks make the Coast Gallery a work of art in itself. 

The complex also includes the Coast Cafe. Fresh ingredients, many sourced in Monterey County, go into a menu that includes innovative appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, and deserts. The cafe also features a picnic provisions store with well made charcuterie, cheese, snacks, beer, wine and soda, making it an ideal stop for travelers looking for a roadside snack. 

The Coast Gallery and Cafe is 33 miles south of Carmel and 54 miles north of Hearst Castle on coastal Highway 1. 

Leashed dogs are welcome inside the galleries and on the dining sundeck, where organic treats and water bowls are offered. Some tables have leash hooks.

Our favorite dog-friendly coastal-cabin hideouts start with a trio of 1940s and ‘50s era motels—Sea Breeze Inn & Cottages,Andril Fireplace Cottages; and Bide-A-Wee Inn & Cottages—in the Monterey Peninsula town of Pacific Grove. Get Inspired in Big Sur
pfeiffer beachCountless artists, mystics, poets, photographers, and happy dogs over the decades are not wrong: Big Sur is about as lovely as it gets. Starting with Pfeiffer Beach, where dogs have to stay on leash on the state-managed portions but can run free if under voice control on the US Forest Service-managed section. Once Rowdy's worked off that excess energy on the beach, the two of you might want to check out the area's artistic heritage at the Coast Gallery, home to six galleries housing works of American artists as well as the Gallery Café, which welcomes human-canine parties on its deck. more »
