Madera County

Madera County Map
Madera County stretches from the agricultural plains of the Central Valley to the heart of the High Sierra and Yosemite National Park. Highway 41 is its main artery, climbing gradually from Fresno through Oakhurst and Fish Camp to the park’s Wawona entrance.

Just 12 miles from the park, Bass Lake recreation area is popular vacation destination offering dog-friendly activities and places to stay. This area is also at the heart of the Madera Wine Trail, whose 12 member wineries are almost all dog-friendly. The Dog-friendly Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad in Fish Camp is fun for all ages. The Redwoods In Yosemite is the perfect choice for a family vacation, reunion, wedding, or business retreat.

Once inside the park, follow Highway 41 past the Wawona Hotel and dog-friendly Wawona campground to some of Yosemite’s most iconic spots, including the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, Tunnel View, Glacier Point and other points of entrance accessed through this southern gateway.

The town Oakhurst in Madera County is the main gateway to Yosemite’s south (Wawona) entrance on the Highway 41 corridor winding through the Sierra Nevada foothills from Fresno. A great stop in Oakhurst is Queen’s Inn by the River, a dog-friendly establishment boasting an adjacent winery, the Idle Hour, and a beer garden where, Wednesdays through Sundays, almost 100 wines and craft beers are available for tasting. Also in Oakhurst are Vulture’s View Inn, a B&B popular with DogTrekkers; and the dreamy (and dog-friendly) Chateau Du Sureau, a castle-like destination inn boasting five stars from Forbes and five diamonds from the American Automobile Association.
